The Church With The
Nearly 80 years ago, Lucy Jernigan rode to Hebron Baptist church each Sunday in her father’s Model T. She said they picked up children at each of the three houses scattered along the way, singing gospel songs as they traveled through the fields. While the scenery has changed, the church, now known as First Baptist Church Hebron, still stands, displaying their original 94 stained glass windows.
In January 2015, the church was made aware that their windows were in trouble. The lead was disintegrating from the heat and some pieces of windows have fallen out.
With much diligence, the members formed a committee to research the options to save the windows. In January, 2016 we accepted a bid after reviewing 10 other bids. The best cost for all the work is $180,000.00. Each window must be removed very carefully by a knowledgeable contractor and then the vintage glass window will be taken to a specialty stain glass artist to repair, replaced, and re-lead each window.
October, 2016 we have raised $115,000.00 from our members and friend. We pray the community will help us also. The south side, which is the first of phase of four is back and beautiful. The next phase will start in February, 2017.
